Learning Disabilities Association of New York City Overview

Mission Statement
The Learning Disabilities Association of New York City (LDA of NYC) has a twofold mission: to facilitate access to needed services for all New Yorkers with learning disabilities, especially those in the more disadvantaged communities, and to provide support to those individuals and their families. To fulfill this mission, LDA of NYC currently operates three main programs: The Learning Disabilities Helpline, The Latino Outreach Program, and The Adult Support Group. The agency currently employs 3 full-time staff members and three people who work on a part-time basis. Full-time staff consists of the Executive Director, an Outreach Coordinator, and a Client Resource Manager for the Helpline. Part-time staff members run the Adult Support Group of Manhattan, while 15-20 volunteers, including Board Members, are used to assist on special projects and during peak periods of need.

History
The LDA of NYC, formerly a branch of the Association for Learning Disabilities of New York State, was independently incorporated in 1989 under Board of Directors President Martha B. Bernard, who has been an advocate for over 35 years, serving parents who need help for their children with learning disabilities. She was involved from the earliest stages of The Learning Disabilities Association of New York State and was an active volunteer in the state office when it was located in New York City. She founded the Manhattan Chapter in 1964 and served as catalyst for the establishment of the Learning Disabilities Association of New York City, Inc., in 1989, where she has served ever since as President of the Board of Directors. The LDA of NYC continues to be affiliated with both the Learning Disabilities Association of New York State and The Learning Disabilities Association of America.

How We Work
LDA of NYC works cooperatively, and largely informally, with other agencies providing similar services, particularly Advocates for Children and Resources for Children with Special Needs. We are unique in that LDA NYC is the only organization in New York City that focuses specifically on the needs of the most underserved people with learning disabilities, thereby supplementing what other, similar agencies can provide.
